So last week at GDC, I was part of the Independent Game Developers Rant and I decided, sorta last minute, to rant about how I hate the appstore and how I feel it is a way for larger companies to sell a brand. Companies like Capcom, Sega, etc, they put out dumbed down, nearly unplayable versions of Megaman and Sonic to sucker people into buying a game. I fell victim to this as well, as I'm one of the people that purchased Sonic 1 on my iPhone a while ago. To this day I have yet to get past the second level in Marble Hill Zone (or whatever the second world is). I related this back to the Tiger Hand Held games of my youth and how they were shitty versions of games I loved. I thought I made a good point, also I love to bash Apple any chance I get. As part of that rant, I talked about an experiment I did where I had a game, Zits n' Giggles, up on the appstore that I would raise one price tier each time someone bought it. The end of the rant I revealed that Zits n' Giggles was up to $349.99. Pretty hilarious. Take a look.

Stephen Totilo at Kotaku did an awesome writeup on it here.

Joystiq also did a writeup of the rant

On March 15th, 2010, about one year after I put Zits n' Giggles on the appstore originally, Apple pulled the game from the store even though I did absolutely nothing wrong. Its kinda bullshit but I did expect it and I want to clear some stuff up:

1. Games are never listed as $1 or $2, they are instead listed as $0.99, $1.99 respectively. So the theories that people thought it was $4 instead of $400 are inaccurate. Listed on the appstore, it would have been listed as $399.99. There are too many digits there to mistake it for $3.99. If anyone did, they probably shouldn't be on the internet using a credit card.

My Theories on why people bought it are either A) They wanted to see what it was, which is stupid or B) It's an elitest thing, where they want to brag that they have "The Most Expensive Game on the App Store" or C) They know who I am and they just want to support. Personally I feel B is probably the most likely. Think of the number of people with iPhones on the appstore, quick google search shows 30 Million sold as of Mar. 2009. If we take that number and assume that maybe a 10th of that actually use the appstore (which I'm sure is higher, but whatever) that means roughly 0.000013% of the people bought the game that have an iPhone. Those are pretty good odds to have rich people, elitists, etc to buy the game and NOT RETURN IT.

That's another point...you can return Apps on the appstore within 90 days. Some have returned, most have kept the game.

2. Some people think I scammed people. Here is an equivalent scam in the same terms that pricing an app on the appstore.

Me: "Hey, I'll give you this pencil for $399.99"
You: "Ok"
Me: "Thanks"

That's it, how is that a scam? If you ask someone for something, and they give it to you knowing that the value of the item you are giving them is much less than the price being paid...then they either really want it..or they have more money than brains...or they just want to give you $399.99. As far as it being unethical, etc...that's hilarious. I mean seriously, who in their right mind would pay $399.99 for an iPhone game thinking it was "Worth that". That's more than Xbox 360 or a PS3 a Netbook but only slightly less than an iPad. I believe in the Zits n' Giggles game we mocked how horrible the game. Never did we make any claims that it would make your phone run faster, or clear your face of acne, or get you laid...we said it was a crap game and it was. It was made in about a total of 10 hours over a few weeks. It isn't something I care about.

Think about this for a moment. How much is an iPad...and how much is a netbook that does more? If I'm a scammer for charging $399.99 for a stupid app, Apple is a scammer for charging a starting price of $500 for a sub par netbook, and charging more than double the market price for RAM and etc etc....I could go on and on how Apple abuses their fanbase by inflating their prices because they have an Apple logo on them, but I don't want to get into that.

Either way, I couldn't care less they took it down, so long as they paid me for what I earned. They can hold it for the full 90 days (even though they have a 45 day cycle) for all I care. I have no intentions on doing anything for iPhone or iPad ever...I hate the platforms and I hate the stores. I will end up doing a Mac version of Super Meat Boy, but thankfully that isn't sold through their crappy AppStore. You are more likely to see Super Meat Boy on an Android phone then you are to see Super Meat Boy on an iPhone, but you won't see it on any phone because A PHONE IS NOT A GENERIC GAMING PLATFORM. IT WORKS FOR SOME GAMES, BUT NOT EVERYTHING. I CANNOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH. JUST BECAUSE SOMETHING HAS THE ABILITY TO RUN GAMES THAT DOESN'T MEAN EVERY GAME SHOULD BE MADE FOR IT. That is all, now I'm going to go play Pokemon on my TI-83 while you enjoy screenshots of SUPER MEAT BOY.

What a whiny little bitch. If you don't like a platform, then don't develop for it.

I find it much more likely that you developed a game to *gasp* make money. But it was a crappy game, and you didn't. So instead of taking your lumps like a man you decided to pretend you were an "artist" and tried to scam the stupid.

What is most interesting though is that you seem to have the power of telling people what they should consider a game. Not only is that much more controlling than Apple, it shows both a disdain for consumers and a massive ego. I guess the 30 million plus users are wrong. All of the 160,000 apps must be crap. But atleast your shifty, scamming ass can't even compete at making "Tiger Games".

"Express an opinion, get an app pulled."

Really?

"I talked about an experiment I did where I had a game, Zits n' Giggles, up on the appstore that I would raise one price tier each time someone bought it. The end of the rant I revealed that Zits n' Giggles was up to $349.99."

Sounds like your app was pulled because you were being an idiot. If an accidental purchase of your game put a customer's credit card over its limit, who do you think would end up paying the overlimit fees? And if it was purchased with a check card, put their account balance below $0, and resulted in hundreds of dollars of overdraft fees, who do you think would pay the fees?

Not you. It'd be Apple's mess to clean up, and they pulled your app to avoid having to deal with the inevitable mess.

Claiming that your app was pulled because you "express[ed] an opinion" is speculation at best.

Tommy says:

March 21st, 2010 2:03:44 am

@Josh I'm having trouble with your point. You are basically siding with someone that mistook $349.99 for a price other than $349.99. I find it hard to believe you think someone would mistake this, and if they did you would sympathize for them not understanding the concept of 10's and 100's. I believe you are arguing for the sake of arguing. Go to walmart, pick up a PS3, go to the register, look at the price of $339.00 plus tax and then pay for it thinking it was only $3.39 then ask walmart to pay your overdraft fees because your stupidity caused you to be overdrawn by a couple hundred dollars plus the resulting overdraft fees. They would laugh at you and then you would go home and deal with your problem that you caused by not paying attention to the CLEARLY MARKED PRICE. Apple would do the exact same thing...they have the prices marked clearly on the appstore for a reason.

@Josh You are god damn right I want the money. I didn't hold a gun to anyones head, I didn't set the price myself to deceive anyone. I selected a pre-determined price tier set forth by Apple via their Application manager as a JOKE. When people started buying it, I increased it. When you price an app you don't type in "$399.99" into a text field, you select from a dropdown of price tiers, I started at price tier 1 and ended up at tier 78. Appstore displays prices as they are, not rounded. So you'll see $0.99, $1.99, $11.99, $349.99, etc. The people that bought it, for whatever reason, have every right to return it within 90 days, if they don't, then it is MY MONEY. How did I scam anyone? I put an app up called ZITS N GIGGLES, then priced it at $399.99 and people bought it. How by any stretch of the imagination is that a scam? I'm going to attempt to scam you right now ok? Get ready. Send me $399.99 (THREE HUNDRED NINETY NINE DOLLARS AND NINETY NINE CENTS). Checks are fine. On that note, I doubt I'll see the money.

I understand you perceived it is not a scam because people brought it for that price. Many people out there does not know you can get refunded in 90 days if you don't like it. You are still scamming, testing people like lab rats. Most people out there know apps are .99 - to 14.99. Supposed people were on another website and they saw a game that looked interested, and on that website it said .99 for your app. Then lead it to the apple store and purchased it without thinking of price because they saw that price on that previous website saying .99. I really think as a developer, I'm quite disappointed on what you make us look like. There are "ethics" which you are making yourself look like a disrespectful person. I will say there are lot of people who are not smart people in world, some may have some vision problem, who can't tell difference with prices. Again think of your consumers, or you will lose them permanently. I know for sure I'm not buying any of your games due to the disrespect you provided.

I am having trouble seeing how this is a scam. Tommy did nothing wrong. He simply created a game, submitted it to the App Store, and when it was accepted, he created a description, uploaded screenshots, and set a price. For this game, the price was obviously unreasonable, but the good thing about free enterprise is that no one had to buy it! Not a single one of Tommy's customers was required in any way, shape, or form to purchase the game. They were not even required to look at the page. They saw all of the information clear as day, and made a choice. If someone slammed Apple or Tommy with a lawsuit over this, they would most likely lose because of these facts.

Good job using your marketing and business senses to prove a point, Tommy, and good job at getting out there and sharing your opinion. I hope you receive all of the profit that Apple owes you.

On a different note: I can not wait for SMB to be released! I loved the PC "prototype" and am sure this will be even better!

Breaker says:

First, I think its awesome that you tried this experiment and that it turned out to be profitable for you, especially since profit was not your original goal. Its true that anyone who bought that game by mistake can get a refund, so I'd say there's no harm done. However, what I don't quite get is how you can claim to hate the App Store because of this. I mean, how can you hate a commerce mechanism that allows you to sell a joke game for an insane price and have people actually buy it? Assuming those people bought it willingly, then all you've likely done is give someone with an obscene amount of disposable income something to brag about to their friends. So based on this, its no surprise at all that every game company in the world is vomiting out dumbed-down versions of their back catalog purely to cash in. But that doesn't mean that the iPhone is a bad platform for games, or that every game on the App Store is crap. It just means that its a potent marketplace for games- good or bad. Its up to the consumer to decide what's worth buying and what's not.

Congratulations on letting the internet into your life. This whole comments thread... xD

Personally, I don't have much against apple, but I loved the talk.

I think that there are certainly games which work on the iPhone, but it comes down to developing that idea with the iPhone in mind, rather than porting things which don't suit the interface. So, for the most part, platformery/actiony games just don't suit it. A lot of companies are certainly jumping on the band-wagon, throwing out whatever they can to capitalize on people's spontenuity, and the ease of purchasing on the platform. But I don't think this means there aren't legit, good games on the iphone, which are trying to explore its rather unique interface.

It's sturgeon's law: 90% of everything is crud.

I'm interested in seeing if this is actually unique to Apple's AppStore, or perhaps a common phenomenon for digital purchases or even game sales in general. In other words, if it were possible to replicate this experiment on the Steam store (which it almost certainly isn't), would you get similar results? Perhaps this isn't a statement about Apple's customers but rather one about how people interact with quick purchases and non-physical products. Or perhaps not - either way seems pretty fascinating to me.

Plants versus Zombies was pretty alright on the iphone, and so was Canabalt; both these games are probably better than their pc based counterparts. I got megaman 2 too, which plays really awful and have since deleted it, so i kinda agree with your point.

Developers are cashing in with shite ports, agreed, but i have at least 3 games i enjoy on there and a few jokey things i enjoy too, so don't write the thing off. It'd be like closing this blog down because of john and the other retards who're posting in the comments.

I'm still looking forward to super meat boy; I remember playing it (it might have been a flash based version) at some point and look forward to dropping a few sheckles on XBLA when it comes out, even if it's 1200 points, so stop whining back at these losers XD

Wow,best artical ever. I'm glad I read this. I hate apple, their stuff is Shit. I have an iTouch and have been dissapointed with almost every app I've ever gotten, and am a little dissapointed with my iTouch at the moment. And with how buggy the iPad is,they shouldn't even charge 100$ for that piece of crap.

Can't wait for SMB.
