1  Super Meat Boy / Level Editing / Chapter Bug (read and respond please!) on: June 15, 2011, 05:10:42 PM
We believe we know what is causing the chapter bug, but we need your help nailing it down.

if you cant upload levels, please post your steam display names here (not login names) that will help us nail down what is causing the crashes.

as far as xbla vs pc.. i would still always lean towards pc because of SMW, level editor and extra achievements. The xbla advantages are of course stability (because we only have to test for bugs on one system type) control (if you dont have a usb xbox pad) and a large tv to play the game on.

When it comes to the stability on pc.. things get iffy.

Now i will say SMB is currently 100% stable on a very great majority of Pcs (outside of SMW) ive honestly never experienced a crash on any of my pcs and we never get any stability feedback at all lately (this is a very good sign seeing as last month we sold a great deal of active copies and got no stability crash issues reported).

BUT!

As a pc gamer you know as well as i do that its IMPOSSIBLE to get your game to work on every single persons pc as it should. ive never ever played a pc game that didnt crash or have minor issues and bugs, and this is because how different everyones pcs actually are. we always update with any even minor crash issues that are reported (we should probably add them in our steam update news).

there no way a pc game can ever be as stable as a console game because a console is a single operating system you dev for.

that said, next game we do we will of course have the ability to test on more systems more intensively and hopefully will avoid most issues at launch.

if it was exclusively about forum users im sure the vote would pass. the other very important thing to remember is the handfull of members in this forum is in no way the majority of people who play the game, it only represents a very hardcore and dedicated group.

the pc version of the game has well over 300k active users currently and its very important to think about the majority in the case of erasing everyones best times in a game like SMB.

i know the SMB world seems isolated to this forum, but my inbox tells a greatly different story.

Ok, im responding even though ive said most of this before.

First off, Fucking relax, i read this thread from start to finish and it seems to just be here to upset everyone and by the end the shits thats flying around doesnt even make sense...

now that you are all relaxed, ill try and re-explain what i can.

we love our fans, please do start shooting off shit about how we dont care anymore about bla bla bla, its just total bullshit. every morning we wakeup to tons of emails from fans and respond to them all, we take time out of our day to talk to anyone who has questions and help anyone who has issues. we love our fans, but if you come out the gates blindly bashing us, then demanded a question answered you will probably be ignored.

now on to the facts.

1. We have and ALWAYS will update any major bugs in SMB, Tommy actually lost many nights of sleep doing udates as fast as he could to make sure the game ran smoothly on everyones pc. adding multipal levels of detail settings, key mapping support and fixing every major bug that was sent to him because he cared about the game and the fans. this has lasted 6 months and is still happening. to say we dont care about bugs or our fans is a huge insult.

2. the level editor we promised in jan was basically a released devmode with no upload support or super meat world. we actually went out of our way to buy a server, design SMW and rig up and upload system with steam user names connected all because we wanted the fans to have something more. When devmode was hacked out on the 3rd day of release we supported it and even added these forums so peopel coudl share their work. we made SMW because of the fans... SMW wasnt ever promised at all early on it was simplly a free update we spent a lot of hard work and money on so users could share their work. we asked for nothing in return other then to understand that the level editor was in Beta and not everything in SMW would function as desired.

3. Steam doesnt allow for leaderboards on every user created chapter, its not possible for us to do.

4. There is no way to get chapters to save, we have tried hard to do this but it caused way to many issues.

5. we do have a fix for the 0 time bug, but it means restarting all leaderboards. we have talked about this many times and the response is always "we would rather keep the 0's". and even after the 0's were gone.. people could still hack the game and add them.

6. we are working on a big update that should be out soon that should fix most/all bugs in SMW as well as the lag between levels in the latest update. it will also hopefully make it so everyone can upload chapters without a crash (this is a very hard one to track down because we can recreate it). This update will also add "the unknown" feature and a few other small bonus's we have been working on.

conclusion:

Most of you are very off base here, its HUGELY insulting to say we dont care about our fans and are "taking the money and running" this is very obviously not the case at all. Those of you who wonder why i might snap back at people who accuse us of not caring i hope you can understand what it feels like when you really bend over backwards to give people something more then was promised and they bitch about how it has a crack in it or is missing a piece.

in the end ill say it again, fuckin relax, enjoy what you have, we do our best to fix what we can and if something is missing, it obviously isnt because we are lazy, its simply because its not doable, or will break the game...

i really hope this comment isnt followed by "BUT WHY CANT YOU DO THIS!"

seriously people, just be cool and understanding.. think logicly and dont jump to fucking crazy ass conclusions.

we obviously care a great deal about our fans.

youd lose that bet.

the next update we are doing will also feature a recommended section that pops up when you click levels, this section will act like an archive of featured chapters that will showcase all the best ones forever.

we will be hand picking these much like the featured one.

FYI i read as many forum posts as i can, even the dickish ones.

Its quite hard not to say, "fuck off this was a free update! we pay a large server cost for and we didnt even get paid and you repay us by bitching like little children".. but instad of continuing on like that ill "level"(haw haw) with you.

90% of the updates you ask for we cant add because they will break the game, as some of you have seen the last update caused a glitch in the main game that paused between levels (fixed in the next update) but what im trying to get at is we have a rule set in place and if we break that rule set shit falls apart and then needs to be totally rebuilt.

This is the main reason why the editor and SMW took so long to release. We REALLY DIDNT WANT TO WORK ON THIS GAME FOR ANOTER 6 MONTHS! and we didnt have to, but we did because we really liked what you guys were making in these forums and felt like you guys would understand if things were rough around the edges.

but what this boils down to is this, once we fix the major issues people are having and finalize the last features of SMW we are done. theres no reason to suggest anything or complain about anything here because honestly all its going to do it make me read the post less, and i dont want to do that.

Please be happy with what you have, we didnt charge you for it and we made it as a gift to you. when you bitch about it and make us out like we are lazy, you really come off like prissy little spoiled girls who didnt get blink 182 to play at their super sweet 16.

WE DONT WANT TO MAKE SUPER MEAT BOY FOR THE REST OF OUR LIVES! we are starting a new game soon and we want to be done... i fully appreciate your love for our game.. but come on, you will have totally forgotten about the editor in a few months anyway even if every suggestion got added and no one will give a shit about SMW next year. lets have our fun while we can and move the fuck on!

TO THE NEXT GAME I SAY!

finding out the chapter crash is more prominent in the tools shortcut may be very helpful. thanks guys!

I've encountered a glitch where sometimes after deleting objects in my levels, the area they were in still kills your character and there's no way to delete them. While with stuff like saw launchers and missile launchers this isn't problematic, with normal saws or spikes it is. I don't think this is just me either, I've noticed it in a few levels I've played.

When it happens to me I've been able to just cover it up with blocks to mask the invisible saw, but this can potentially ruin levels with a lot of work done on them.

just reload the level and it will be fine.

are you guys still runing devmode or the tools shortcut? you should only run from the shortcut and no longer use -devmode

really looking forward to what you make next.

14  Super Meat Boy / Level Editing / Re: Beta Level Editor is up! on: May 09, 2011, 02:58:32 PM
can those of you getting the crash post your system specs please.
15  Super Meat Boy / Level Editing / Re: Beta Level Editor is up! on: May 07, 2011, 11:21:55 PM
ive only gotten it to crash once in the chapter maker but it was just rapidly placing levels 1-20 then deleting.. i couldn't get it to do it again after that.

is it always consistent for you guys? like does it always crash on level #X or is it a specific level that is crashing it? anything specific would be helpful so i cant test and see if its a character or tileset that might be making it crash.
