1  Super Meat Boy / Meat Talk / Re: Most Annoying Level to Speedrun on: July 04, 2012, 01:22:03 PM
7-5X is a lot more annoying; I hate the middle room in that one, they're never in a convenient spot.

Huh? How can the enemies not be in a convenient spot? If you're running that level seriously you should always be running at full speed, and if you keep up the pace there's a fairly simple path through the level. It's all about doing the turnarounds as fast as possible.

Here's Breakdown's video for reference, you could shave about 0.3s off but the path is the same anyway.

The relevance of programming experience is being able to see how incredibly stupid it was to implement the level uploading the way Tommy did. I think the open door analogy is a good way to illustrate this. Tommy built a house with no friggin' front door, then someone walked in and trashed stuff. I don't disagree with you saying that the house shouldn't have been vandalized, but I'm still going to put the blame on the guy who thought not having a door there would be a good idea and ask what the hell he was thinking.

He only started being rude after people were fucking with things.

Those quotes are from after people found this out but before anyone actually did anything. "It's fine. Trust me." "I've done this stuff for a while now. Thanks for your concern though."

And it's really stupid to say that he "launched a flawed product" with super meat boy

There are two kinds of people in this thread. Those who have any kind of clue about programming and some idea to what it means to give everyone full database access, and those who think it's perfectly reasonable to remove the front door from your house and expect nobody to ever walk in uninvited.

The way I read that post was "I was so burned out by all the other work that I decided to ignore security altogether and hope nothing bad happens". Understandable on a personal level, but the bottom line is still that he knowingly shipped a flawed product. And if you reread the thread, it's not only about the problems with the game, but also Tommy's awful public response at the time. I honestly wonder if anything would have happened if he originally responded with a post like this instead of, well, this: http://imgur.com/xociV

Wow. I think I went through the saws once by accident, then I tried to repeat it for a while, failed every time and concluded it probably isn't possible. That 12s is with the regular strat of letting the saws pass before entering the middle section.

The main thing that costs me time is that I grab the key by sticking to the wall, jumping to the key, jumping back to the wall, then going back, which is the easiest way. You could save a little time by landing on the key and even more by grabbing the key while still sticking to the wall, but the latter is really precise, and the dash will cut off in the middle of the jump back. I'm not sure how Runman works exactly but I believe it would be possible to dash again there and make the jump? Also you could probably cut a little slack in climbing the tower on the way back, I doubt I'm playing that optimally.

Seeing that this has become a general speedrunning thread,

Tunnel, I trust you'll succeed where I have failed. Takuji has 10.68s here so the yellow star is currently 1.41s behind. My time has plenty of room for improvement, but that much might be stretching it.

Just posting to say I 100% agree with what all these 1-post users are saying.
8  Super Meat Boy / Meat Talk / Re: anyone still playing? on: January 02, 2012, 09:55:04 AM
My project to get a passable time on every level finally saw some new progress. Just did 18.35s on Omega, now there's only No Quarter left.

edit - Did No Quarter too, but played the last room way too carefully so I'm left with mixed feelings. 18.95s is ok for the purpose of not taking a huge hit in global time, but eh, that was so sloppy. Yet I'm not at all motivated to grind more. And here I was expecting to celebrate, sigh.
9  Super Meat Boy / Meat Talk / Re: Legit Leaders? on: November 05, 2011, 01:16:16 AM
73L is insane and has also invested a ton of time into this, I doubt anyone will ever beat his global time in this game. As far as I know the top legit globals on Steam are

1. 73L (~2045)
2. Alwayssleepyguy (~2228)
3. TunnelingEffect (~2304)
4. Emmawatsonsbf (~2365)
5. me (~2465)
6. Roboticaust (~2469)
7. Nicco (~2572)

I'm pretty sure this at least was the case the last time I was playing. I don't know if new challengers have a appeared since then but I'm not holding my breath for anyone to start trying when most others have already left. The irc channel where we had like half the top players died long ago and personally there's nothing driving me to push my times anymore. For global times, just going through all 250 levels to get a reasonable time on everything is a pain which not many have felt like going through. One sloppy time from your first playthrough accounts for more than huge amounts of grinding to perfect a handful of others. If I ever find the motivation to finish and do Omega and No Quarter properly I could drop almost 40 seconds.

Also:

Really depends on the character/s you main as well.  You can't really judge a Runman/Naija main against a Meat Boy/Kid main, because their ceiling scores will always be lower on one side.  That said, 73L/Tunnelingeffect is probably top 50 "legit" Global Steam Leaderboard-wise.  We've all got 0.00 glitch times somewhere though, their impossible to avoid and erase too...especially if you've been playing since release.

So yeah, rate players solely on their consistency and mains.  I personally haven't gotten around to speedrunning all the levels so far (I'm a Meat Boy/Kid main although I do have the rare Naija/Runman run here and there).  And I'll break into the 2650 secs with that main at some point.

My main is "whoever is fastest on the level at hand", as should be everyone else's who's competing for level times. Anything else is dodging.

Anyone use a USB SNES controller? I think it'd be epic.

Amateurs. I'm running with this: http://www.retrousb.com/product_info.php?cPath=21&products_id=28

Also, I'm going to stop writing stuff like "fastest time" in video descriptions since like as not, they're only going to stand for at most a week and going back and editing video descriptions is a pain.

I learned that on my first video compilation as about half my times got improved pretty much immediately. On the second one I just prefaced everything with "at the time of submission" and called it a day.

I guess I'll also post my second one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8AFiy5Fpj-Y

Contains 5-1X, 5-2X, 5-3X (Runman), 5-6, 5-6X, 5-7, 5-7X, 5-11X, 5-12X, 5-13, 5-13X, 5-16X and 5-17 (Runman). I thought I'd make a third compilation with all the random stages I've done in chapters 1-3 and the heavily improved Hell runs, and then my own topic with all the single stages indexed, but I'm not sure when I'll actually get around to do it so might as well just leave this one here.

You might want to re-check the leaderboard on that level.
But those were some amazing runs. Props to you man!  Meat Boy

Your time is actually one of those I was referring to with "unknown names having slightly better and possibly legit [times]", I don't remember seeing you on a lot of levels and it was pretty suspicious to have sleepy, emma and tunnel within 0.02s and some other dude beating them by 0.24s. Oh well, credited you in the video description.

Failing to get the record on that level out of all things is actually quite disappointing as I think I should be able to do a jump on top of the hill, based on two guys on IRC report they were doing it, while I kept dying unless I artificially killed my fps. Which I of course wouldn't do on any serious attempts. Not jumping means you'd have to either do a full stop before falling or do that zip back to the wall, and I'm pretty sure a light jump into the walljump would be faster. I'm a bit doubtful about improving the time with the strategy I'm currently using, as I got that time after a day of grinding with a shitload of 7.51-7.55 times before it. A record with a different char on a different path would have been so much cooler than the usual case of small improvements here and there.

Fuck, now I have to beat your 5-3x :( :(

Oh btw, I beat you on 1-12 too a couple of days back. I was just looking at your post history and noticed that level there. Also, I did it with Naija, so this is almost on-topic!

  • 5-11X: Naija (7.45 -- Polari) or The Kid (7.58 -- Polari)
A misunderstanding here - only the Naija time is mine, The Kid is alwayssleepyguy's.

Also like I said, you could just fill Naija to all the blanks in Hell. I'm not going to go through them in game at this very moment, but on a quick youtube refresher, there's only a few I'm not sure of.
