1  General Stuff / Video Games! / What has Binding of Isaac done totally right that Diablo III did horribly wrong? on: July 09, 2012, 04:43:15 PM
Diablo 3 came out on May 15th and cost me about 60 dollars and took years upon years for a massive team to create.

Binding of Isaac: Wrath of the Lab came out May 28th and cost like, 5 dollars or something and two people made it in 3 months, maybe a year counting the expansion.

I played Diablo 3 about 2 weeks straight. On an off. Beat Normal difficulty and I haven't touched it since.

I've played Isaac every day since the expansion came out, and almost as much prior.

I can't stop thinking about how ridiculous that is. Anyone want to help me make a list of all the things Isaac did right that Diablo 3 did wrong?

Here's a few I can think of:
-Dying matters. I know the rogue-like, start-all-the-way-over style of game play isn't for everyone, but in Diablo 3, death means nothing other than... shit, it means nothing. You can almost always go right back to where you were. I rarely even care how many hit points I have. In Isaac, I really care if I die. If I'm at the end of a really good run and get killed by those walking butts that shoot blood out of their front butts I gnash my teeth and want to throw my keyboard.

-Pick-ups are important. Every heart that drops in Isaac matters. You need that heart to keep going usually. Every key means you have a chance to get a little bit stronger. In Diablo 3, everything just explodes in piles of almost always useless crap.

-The gameplay feels different in Issac depending on merely a few items. The way I play Isaac seems to change with every run. In Diablo 3, you have all these classes and skill trees, but it always feels like I'm just holding down the left mouse button, maybe calculating DPM and changing some stuff around to do AOE or high damage.

-I never feel like I'm grinding in Isaac. I'm trying to reach a goal and the monsters in my way are legitimate obstacles, not things I have to click on for more XP to get my stats high enough to have a probable chance of defeating this or that boss.

Don't get me wrong. Diablo 1 and 2 were some of my favorite games, and I did enjoy most of the experience of Diablo 3. I just feel like Isaac nailed so many things that seemed flawed in Diablo 3... things I loved in Diablo 1 and 2 for some reason.

I could go on and on, but I figured I'd finally join this forum and see if anyone felt the same way / had the same experience.
