I too, sadly, am running Windows Vista and was unable to get the compatibiliy mode trick to work.

I have noticed, however, that if you wait a couple seconds before selecting a level that the crash is much less frequent. It only seems to happen after I've come out of the leaderboards and then selected a level immediately.

I've gone from crashing every couple minutes to only crashing on the odd occasion. It's not exactly a fix, but it's much better than restarting the game every time you play a new level.

Is there any way I can play my game on another compatibility as well as -lowdetail?

The game is about meat parkour, not standing still

Not really collin, sorry.  You can put it into win95 iirc, but I've been told that crashes the game hardcore since 95 doesn't support dx9.0c.  The compatibility fix is for win7 users only.  The rest of you just have to tough it out until Tommy finds whatever is causing that silly bug.  It is indeed a newer issue that cropped up within the last patch or two when patching much more annoying bugs.  If anything, I'd be more willing to tolerate the random loading crash than the other crashes and glitches that were in the game a few patches ago.  I have been told though, that the loading crash thing happens less often if you take menus slower.  When you enter leaderboards try not cycling to the next view instantly and see if that helps any.

About every other time between levels (selected, finished, character switched, etc.), an error occurs, a mini-dump (hehe) is sent, and I have to close the game. I have a snazzy computer and SMB is the only game that crashes like this. How can I fix this, or at least minimize the crashes?

edit: oh. that's what I do.

I can confirm the Win XP compatibility check works to stop my crashes...so far.  Win 7 64.

But seriously, I'd like to see a leaderboard organization that ranks players on character type rather than simply speed.  I.E. A meat boy category, flywrench, Captain V etc...  At least that way I'd own the leaderboards, with Meat Boy :)...!  I don't concern myself w/ other characters when speedrunning.

^Had to be said without making a separate thread.
