BEAT is pertty hard, but BIT.TRIP CORE is harder. It took me 5 tries to get past Stage 1. I always died a bit before the boss D:

I've tried the first level of Beat probably around 5 tries.

I've never played any BIT.TRIP game other than .BEAT. I've gotten to the last stage, but never reached the boss on it. I always mess up somewhere near the middle. Not to mention, it took me like four months (took a lot of long breaks) to pass the second one.

Never played any of the sequels. I don't want BIT.TRIP CORE, however, but RUNNER.

Fighting games like Street Fighter 3: 3rd Strike. Everyone plays differently in that game, and you have to master the Parry system. In that game you're not so much playing the character and no what they can do, you're playing the player and no two people play alike... except for scrubs who pick Ryu/Ken and mash. But that applies to any fighter really.

I'd also go with the OP's listing of Ikaruga. Hardest bullet-hell game I've ever played.

There's your problem

Yeah, RUNNER is pretty good, but really easy compared to the others because of the bit-sized levels. I think FLUX pulled it off better, with the regular level length, but checkpoints so newbies can finish the game too, but veterans still have trouble with good scores.
Speaking of that I'm so damn close to perfect the first level of FLUX. But the boss hates me
