-You can race your best time ghost on each level (this would make the high score lists even more competitive)
Racing your ghost is ok but racing other ghost will jump reveal the pattern to everyone and thus ruining the idea of the leaderboards.[/quote]

How so? Just because you know a route doesn't mean you can beat it.

Mario Kart Wii for example, regardless of what you think of the game itself was wonderful fun to time trial because you could download the world record ghosts and race against them to improve your own times.

I honestly think it'd be a great thing to see!

Yeah, I also think a ghost of your best time is a great addition.  As well as character organization in the leaderboards.

I also think community-based "meta-challenges" would be a great idea, where we all compete to accomplish a specific challenge and base a leaderboard/user-feature on it.  Like putting a temporary "player emblem/nick" onto everybody's start screen or onto the Steam game background.  This game really begs to have a more direct community integration whereas now it's sort impersonal and separated.

As for multiplayer, it could work if it was implemented properly.  If we mean co-op time based levels where you compete for best time.  I mean, if we look at the Brownie boss fight, it's easy to assume that both character models would become too "blended together" in some cases.  So I'm thinking the "ghost idea" works here too, you simply race the ghost of another player instead of having two different "Meat Boy's" onscreen.

The Demon's Souls online model seems pretty ideal w/ ghosts, as well as being able to see friends play in their own levels as you do (even if not competing against each other) if turned on in options.  Anyway though, just my thoughts.

We had a thread about multiplayer earlier... I'll go see if i can find it for you guys.

EDIT: Here was my original idea

I always just thought of simple split screen for local mp would be kinda fun. It'd just be a race to see who could beat each level first, and when somebody completed the next level would load then they could go!

You could even put some custom maps in

so here is what I envision:

-Dude 1 Hosts a Multiplayer Race Game
-Dudes 2 and 3 join the game. They are all Meat Boys of different shades, or you could just put a colored arrow above each player ALA SSBB(but you can also select other characters you have unlocked)
-They race in a level. Dude 2 dies halfway through and respawns for another try. Unlimited Lives
-Dude 1 barely beats Dude 3 at the end, and Dude 3 chooses to switch to Jill for the next level.
-Dude 1 gets +10 points for beating a level, and Dude 3 +5.
-The next level loads, Dude 3 wins this time. Dude 3 gets +10 and Dude 2 coming in second place gets +5

This will continue until they play 10 races or so.

A neat idea, but with things like the keys and disappearing blocks, that could wind up annoying (though I suppose it could work on different screens as I'm sure you've invisioned).

To get a decent idea of this, go play Jumper Redux, it has a multiplayer almost dead on with this (Spoiler alert: Meat Boy is based on the Jumper series). Players connected over a LAN connection (yay Hamachi) and did basically this.

You just wasted your time reading this information, as it is useless, and as such you wasted your time. Furthermore, you wasted even more time by reading this statement, a it is just as useless as the prior. So, not only did you waste time, but you wasted time after wasting your time. Make your time

I think we should keep our dreams a little more grounded... I don't think Team Meat is going to take on such a huge project as adding entire new systems like multiplayer to a game they've already released, especially when there is no financial benefit to be seen.

A few more art tiles and and hazards on the other hand sounds like something that could be done (at least the art) in spare time for fun between actual work over the course of months... it's also something people are less likely to obsess over and constantly put pressure on them to hurry up and finish. If I were in their shoes, I wouldn't want to open up a new can of worms like that after the portal is done. That's just my two cents though and I'm not saying anything is wrong with just throwing ideas out there... I just wouldn't actually expect anything to come of it, that's all.

No, the idea is to get the best time. All it means is that those of us who swap replays around with each other on forums and the like to watch each other's best runs aren't significantly advantaged over Joe Bloggs who doesn't run in all these online circles but loves speedrunning.

Maybe the high score ghosts, but there is no helping people in Meat Boy. It'd have to be a head-to-head run of the level, with scoring based on who wins first, who dies least, both, or different modes for each. Maybe you'd also both have to be Meat Boy and your opponent appears as Brownie.

Should Super Meat Boy ever have Multiplayer implemented, I think it should go something like this:

From the main menu there would be a Multiplayer option. Selecting this option will match you with another player with as close a skill set as possible. You vote on a number of levels to play, 10, 20, or 30. Then, once you choose how many levels, each player gets to pick half of the levels according to their taste. Gameplay is very similar to the regular game, as in as soon as you die you respawn. The first person to touch bandage girl "Wins" that level and it changes to the next one, and whoever gets more wins by the end is declared the victor. Should it end up in a tie, the game will pull another level out at random and the winner of that is declared the victor.
