You can land in this one spot without it killing you. Moving to the left or right makes you die though.

yea ive encountered a couple of those on other levels to, kinda funny when it happens.

That's a glitch that happened me a lot of times in some levels I playtested for Leiche, as well as some official levels, so I don't think it's Sewers of Goo-specific.

Doesn't change anything to the fact that all the level if affected with that glitch as well as every other levels.

I've also come across a few spots like this in the main game, 2-5 has one in the huge needle pit near-ish the spawn point.

the reason is they use fans to kill you with acid that does nothing on top of it either to rid inconsistencys with moving textures or to allow you to sink in before dying (yes, it gives a better feel to the game). going on ultra-low detail shows you the fans underneath and all the safe spots.
