Okay, you will need an X-Box 360 controller, but you can play as Brownie on the PC Version (D2D and Steam). Here's the code you need to enter:

RB RB RB B B B X

Alternatively, Brownie is a selectable option on the upcoming level editor, so there will be playable Brownie Levels on the portal. Paradise Lost, for example, is a level pack that will let you play as Brownie.

You don't need an XBox 360 controller. I've done it with a generic PC USB controller. You just need to press the same buttons that basically correspond to the 360 controller's buttons.

Example - button 2 = B, button 4 = X

It's true that just about any controller can unlock Brownie (at least, I haven't heard of any failing to), but so far, nobody has found a way to use him with the keyboard. You would think that it'd just be a matter of transferring the 3xbuttonA, 3xbuttonB, buttonC pattern, but I haven't cracked it if it's there...

That also translates to the PS3 controller if you're using Motionjoy, same exact buttons and combo.  I can do it w/ my Saturn controller too, but I don't remember the sequence off the top of my head.
