The way I see it, a first game not only has to be simple, but it's also something you have to make from the ground up. I know a shitload of programming languages because that's something I've learned over the years (by myself, and at the university), but that doesn't suffice. You should take the time to download the SDL + OpenGL libraries, fire up your favorite IDE and start writing code, so that you understand the basics of projections, translations, rotations, shaders and all that stuff you usually read about but don't care what it really means. Build your own, simple, game engine. Experiment. Then you can move on to something that has already been tested extensively, or stay with your own if you're feeling confident. Oh, and the BBCode stuff? Really?
You see, THIS man knows his sh*t! And yes, the BB code stuff. Basically this thread was made just to say "Don't be a freaking dumbass, making games isn't as simple as just telling it what to do". I have seen WAY too many people on the internet who haven't a clue how much effort and passion you have to put in a game in order to make it. Here's a more in detail post on how to make an indie game: Step 1: Get a game making program Step 2: Learn whatever the coding language it is that you need to learn Step 3: Make sprites and backgrounds Step 4: Program those sprites and backgrounds Step 5: Design levels Step 6: Test Step 7: Fix bugs Step 8: PUBLISH!!! So, yeah, orci, you clearly do not know your sh*t. @Zombie_Plan: Here's a list of what games you should make: 1. Maze game 2. Platformer 3: Turn-based strategy game 4: Top-down shooter 5: Real-time strategy game 6: RPG 7: Whatever... I got that from another website, but I don't think that was the order it went in. Whatever, that list will still work! I've made the tutorial game that came with gamemaker, and a top down scrolling shooter tutorial. I'm working on a maze game as we speak actually, on my netbook.

Now all you non-indie people out there, hear me: Every game maker has to start somewhere, and that somewhere is probably a crap game.

Not really; a lot (if not most) of non-indie game makers out there start in college with programing classes and projects that have little to do with games. To be honest I'd start by learning C# and than transitioning to XNA for cross-platform development and publishing, but mostly because I'm a so-called MS tech fanboy.

Yeah, true, but their first games were still crap.

Instead of using those stupid buttons up there that give you italics and bold text, I use BB code.
Guys, he's the real deal, watch out!I lol'ed outa my pants!!! But uhm yeah, i know some coding. Made some easy java games (Object-oriented). But that's part of my study.

i hardly call gamer maker programming.
any game that is made with game maker shouldn't even be classified as a game, They are all terrible.
Real men use c++ and not shitty game making utilities like you have. Visual Studio - maybe you should learn to use it one day. I I personally dont have a very advanced knowledge of C++, but most languages follow the same syntax and are pretty easy to pickup. I do know how to efficiently program php and java though.

Again, like I said in my first post on this thread, most of the games on YoYo are crap. You know that game Igi? That was made with Game Maker. And yes, real men do use C++.

AS3 engine like flixel or flash punk are very useful to start making games! Unity is also great for 3D games!

There is still a level of programming in Game Maker. Just because you can code in another language doesn't make something else bad. Game Maker is great for a start, and is fun for those of us who don't take it seriously just so we can pretend we're better than everyone else.

While this is true, it's a great start to get into coding. I started with D'n'D, moved on to the simple GML and from there I learned Java, PHP, C++ and AS3. Right now, I prefer AS3 as you can make games which are cross-OS-compatible, and if it doesn't work on, let's say Mac, it's because Adobe fucked up, not because you are using a OS-specific function.
