Ive noticed a lot of the levels ive been uploading to the portal contain a lot of lights, lights and zoom distance are the 2 most cpu intensive aspects of levels so keep a few things in mind.

-Dont ever use more then 3 lights, ever.

-if your level is zoomed out a lot, dont use more then 2

-the size of your lights dont matter, you can make them FUCKING HUGE and it wont effect anything, so try and use large lights rather then using 2-3 lights.

that is all.

I tended to use only one or two lights with my levels, you really shouldn't need any more than 3.

Should be useful for newcomers when the editor is out.

Only really use them when necessary, don't have giant ones casting a really long shadow (unless it's fitting to the style of the level) on tiles, if it needs to be huge, move it further up so there's room for some fading, or make the light less intense by lowering the RGB values of the light.

I must disagree with this. Sunlight in reality doesn't really fade, so if you're going for natural effects, you will usually want one that makes pronounced shadows. On the other hand, artificial lights (fire, lamps, etc) will want to be pretty small.

All I really need to say is that this:

looks way better than this:

Sharper shadows can look good if they're used properly, or in some way that looks good with the theme of the level.

Not too powerful, not too far away.

Only because the second light is too bright, not that it's too large. The third pic you posted completely proves my point. ;)

Will there be a limit to the lights we can place in the editor?
