this entire thread: tl;dr

Oh c'mon, don't be lazy.

There are some good points in this thread!
I know. I just thought that when I was reading.

Feel bad for RyokoTK though

there's only about 10 people maximum complaining about the game
Nope, I know more than 10 persons who are complaining about that.
Exactly. I need some proof that that's an accurate estimate. Maybe the reason there's only ~100 people using it is because it doesn't have everything we want.

No offense man, but it doesn't seem likely (even as much as I'd love to completely agree).

I do wonder though if we really have any idea how many people are using the editor (not that it really makes a huge amount of difference in the end though). They're not obligated to have any sort of presence on these boards, so... it's just tough to make any kind of real assertions about that stuff. If I had to guess though, I wouldn't say 100 seems too far off... I'm just open to the possibility of having no idea.

I, for instance enjoy making levels in all types of games but I don't use devmode because it handles bad.

Also, the lack of portal levels may be because nothing is said on the steam news. Most people who bought the game have completed or abandoned it for a long time and haven't checked on it in a while.

I agree that the portal levels should definitely have leaderboards, even if they are as glitched and bogus as the other leaderboards.

You can at least sift through the times to figure out which ones are legit, which helps find more optimal routes for levels (its a lot easier to do on XBLA, they're just cleaner there).

As Super Meat World is right now, I don't really have any motivation to play custom levels at all.  I was really excited for it when it was announced last year, which is why I purchased the PC version at all, but what we got is just meh.  Maybe someday I'll come back to it.

The problem is that UGC (user generated content), unless it is the sole focus of the game as in Little Big Planet or ModNation Racers, is never that popular a feature, especially in a game as hardcore as this as creating balanced, original and fun levels takes a lot of work. Most people play videogames to be entertained, not to entertain others, as sad as it is to say.

Even if the level editor had all the features in the world, it would still only attract a tiny percentage of people. The game itself has sold over 600,000 copies, so even if you had 6000 editors (with the current reality likely way less than 10% of that) you'd still only represent less than 1% of the audience, and at such low take up, that's again where the cost/benefit ratio comes into account and makes it not feasible to put more time into polishing it, or throwing more money at a self-funded server by having the levels persistently connecting and uploading times.

This is where the accusation of entitlement comes into it. A miniscule percentage of the audience is demanding features that will take a lot of time and money to implement onto something that has likely already cost a lot in terms of time and money yet was given away for free, and are doing so in an incredibly ungratious manner and really showcasing both their immaturity and ignorance of the harsh realities of business.

You can't please everyone, and in a lot of cases (especially via the interent) some people make a career out of never being happy, so you shouldn't even try. The vast majority of people are happy and content with their purchase and have moved on to other games. Those still hanging around and complaining that the sky has fallen in really should find better things to do with their lives, and I'm glad Team Meat have decided to stop indulging them as it's a fool's errand with no end point.

The more people on the editor, the more competition. Think about it!

I'd just like to say that the handful of my friends who I speedrun with, when they found out that SMW wouldn't save completions/times there was a reasonable amount of ire towards being lazy. I suspect that one has been repeated ad nauseum within the fanbase.

The portal/SMW/online section doesn't need much...it just needs that final bit of polish that the rest of the game had. Fix the bugs and I think everyone'd be rather happy.

Problem is the servers are being funded by Team Meat personally - a 2 man team, not a huge publisher. I don't know for certain if this is the case, but i'd imagine having leaderboards and having thousands of times constantly uploaded and downloaded would put more strain on the server and cost more money to run.

When you are given something for free, you can't complain that the people giving it you are lazy simply because they don't want to end up losing money on top of that. The vast majority of players are not speedrunners either, so it'd be even more nonsensical to lose money pandering to such a small demographic.

I said COMPLETION and TIMES.

These things do not equal LEADERBOARDS. You know, the same thing that the non-steam versions of Super Meat Boy do in the Single player chapters. They save what levels you've completed and your times. In a save file. On your hard drive.

You know, how the game saves what levels I've completed in the chapters in the Forest to the Cotton Alley? Or how it saves how many bandages collected? Or what levels I've got an A+ on?

Basic simple local saving of what progress I've obtained. Hell, the game could have a text file with a hash of a SMW level file, the time and a 1 or 0 for whether you've got A+ or not. Something incredibly basic like that. Just so you can see, in game, for YOURSELF whether you've completed any levels.

Beyond getting the levels in the first place so you can play them, you don't need to send a single bit of data to the servers.

Can I upload chapters yet?

I humbly wish this work... with as little entitlement as I can muster.

The thing is that most of the levels on the portal you'll only see once or twice. But the thing I want is the ratings and difficulty fixed.
