I've been on a hiatus for a bit after my motherboard fried up, I'm on the family computer for now.

I've downloaded and installed SMB via Steam thus far. Upon first running, it does the regular installation of DirectX for Windows like with pretty much every other Steam game that uses it. Anyway, upon attempting to run the game, I will see the familiar window stating that it's being prepared to run, then nothing. I try again, this time checking my Steam status, I am in-game for a second and then that border turns blue once again denoting that I'm no longer in-game. I'm not even greeted with an error message of some sort.

I don't know what's causing this, but it has rendered the game completely unplayable since I can't even get to the loading or splash screens.

I'm running Windows XP Home Edition V 2002 Service Pack 3
AMD Athlon Processor 2650e 1.61 GHz. 896 MB of RAM

You've probably already done this, but worth mentioning I guess.  Have you installed DirectX manually with the latest web installer, or tried -ultralowdetail?  On those specs it might need to be.

I've done both of those things. No dice.

Make sure you're firewall/AV isn't messing with it too.  I had almost the exact same issue on my laptop when I first installed it.  Also, video drivers (AND user account restrictions) could be the issue as well.

If all else fails, I guess you could try reinstalling Steam as it sounds like it's failing to property boot the game.  Messing with different compatibility's could also work, but SP3 shouldn't have issues.  Have you also tried just running the SuperMeatBoy.exe without Steam?

Run the game while Steam is not opened on your computer. Running the game through Steam prevents the game from showing error messages on startup that could prevent the game from starting.

Once you've done that, go and post whatever error message the game gives to troubleshoot the rest of the problem.

This application has failed to start because XINPUT9_1_0.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.

I got this error message after running a full re-download and re-install.

I've run it without Steam in the background by going to C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\super meat boy\SuperMeatBoy.exe

That's a DirectX error, if I'm not mistaken. My memory is a bit hazy with DirectX and its nuances.

I've done another manual DirectX install and will reboot before attempting once again. Will return with results.

Try dropping the .dll into the Super Meat Boy directory.

http://www.m3fe.com/content/xinput

But it should have been installed with the latest DirectX redist...

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?familyid=3b170b25-abab-4bc3-ae91-50ceb6d8fa8d

So I'd try to first see if adding the .dll works, and if not just reinstalling the DX redist from the website.

I've gotten successful results. I had an error with my monitor "Out of Range" but I quickly fixed that by forcing it to 60 Hz.

I'm gonna need to use -windowed -ultralowdetail -640x480 to run it on this machine, but it's working at last.
