So here's the scoop.  I decided to start playing SMB today.  I haven't played this game in a long time, I think the last recorded time was in January, it's not that important.  The point is before that, I could run the game fine with no lag and no problems, full screen and all with no problems.

Now I boot it up today and the performance renders the game unplayable, even in window mode.  I tried everything in the stickies and steam forums.  Nothing works.  I've fiddled with the Nvidia control panel and nothing.  I have no idea what's going on.  I can run other games like TF2, Dirt 3, Lord of the Rings online and bad company 2 fine so my laptop is more than capable of running this game.  It ran fine before they implemented the world editor update, not it doesn't.

The menus run fine, but as soon as it loads up a level, the framerate drops.

I'm on an ASUS UL80jt.
1.4ghz quadcore
geforce 310m
4gigs of RAM
Using Steam version with latest nvidia drivers.  Game is freshly installed and files are validated.

Try V-Sync and Triple Buffering.

To be honest man, the game is one of the worst performing games across of variety of PC's...I'd say just abandon the PC version like I did.  Team Meat has made it clear they don't care what PC gamers want from a variety of levels, performance/optimization being #1.  And we've given these two men more than enough time to fix these Mickey Mouse issues, and their either incompetent or they don't care.  I'd love to see a better developer take this game and put out a "proper" PC version...

Problem is when you optimize and program a game for 360 down to the metal and then try to fast track port it to PC, you run into these issues.  And that's just lazy programming/development to be blunt about it.  I get clipping, crashes and lag spikes on a Corei7/GTX480, and there's no excuse for that other than shitty programming and lazy porting, period.

It's hard to suggest any fixes when the game is simply broken from a stability standpoint.  Good luck, but Team Meat has basically run me off from the game both with their combative stance with us fans and failure to get the PC version up to snuff given over 6 months...

The game runs better for me on PC (lowdetail) than on Xbox360, and my PC is a 5 year old laptop that sucks. So even if the game's programming was optimized for the Xbox360, the programming is still lacking a couple of things. This doesn't take away from the fact that it has very good controls and a lot of levels in a fairly small (300MB?) package.

Do you ever experience any sudden lag spikes (preferably in the same spot on a certain level)?  Do you ever get control glitches, clipping, or game crashes.  These things (contrary to what Team Meat will admit) ARE NOT dependent on hardware/software/setting 90% of the time.  The only thing I've experienced that runs better on any PC would be the loading times, and flipping between World screens...other than that the 360 version is rock solid.

But of course we can't forget the 360 version has it's share of glitches, control anomalies, etc.  Not to mention the retarded fan/gravity pulse physics, terrible hitboxes (which on PC can glitch out and kill you).

But I digress, SMB was fun while it lasted but I just wish a better developer who's known for absolute polish and features that work DAY 1 (like Retro Studios) would have made SMB instead.  The community wouldn't be dead already if the technical issues were near non-existent and it was superbly polished.

My SMB Post Mortem:  Amazing game with great platforming ideas and controls, but utterly failed execution when it comes to polish and delivering a product the community can stand behind for years.

I apologize for going off topic, try to eliminate Steam/firewall/AV and see if closing all sorts of apps can diagnose the issue.

What baffles me is the last time I booted it up a few months ago, it ran flawless, now it's unplayable.

How does this happen?

^Could be a issue with bugs introduced with the editor update.  Could also be all kinds of firewall/AV issues too, also make sure your Hertz of your monitor is 60 just to see if it helps.  Problem with a game like this is even the slightest change to settings and especially Firewall (sandbox security) can completely fuck up the game.

But I'd wait for the update next week and hope that will fix some issues.
