This question came up in a thread. It left me wondering how long you guys would generally keep trying a community level you're stuck on before moving on to something different. The key point being that this is a community level and you're not going to get any recognition for having beaten it...

Do you make yourself crazy over some impossible jump just because it's there in front of you? Or, do you just move on quickly when you hit something beyond your skills because there are 1k other levels you haven't tried yet that might be more fun?

This question has some big implications in actual level design ethos for this situation. I personally found that the filled in box (level complete) for the level was the carrot on the stick that kept me getting better at the game and pushing past things that were too difficult for me. Now that we've removed that, what's your motivation for playing? Is it personal?

My mark is usually around 10-20 minutes. This mainly depends on how stupid the level is, not necessarily how hard it is. If it has a lot of cheap shots to kill you, then I'll give up quicker. I'm pretty sure I can beat even hard SMB levels quickly if I set my mind to it.

Depends on how good the level is. If it's really good, I play it all the way through so I can give it the 5 star rating it deserves. If it sucks, I'll probably quit after my second try.

It depends on the level.

1) REALLY miserable maps - easy as pie, ugly like me - I finish them just to rate one star. And it usually takes few tries

2) Hard as shit maps - when creator throws as much shit in your path as possible. These levels aren't hard, but just annoying, and I give up after few tries. I'm not masochist anymore :P

3) Hard and good maps - well, if map is good and challenging, I might actually try to beat this son of a bitch for quite a while (let's say 20 minutes)

4) 'Weird and original' levels - levels creators like checking unusual ways to use obstacles, physics bugs, etc. You can get masterpiece or complete bullfuck. If map is good, I actually try for about 20 minutes before I say the map to go fuck itself.

Well the thing that when i playing to just beat it and think "i nead to beat it" and than "faster" "faster" and so on i do stupid mistakes. But when i say myself i am playing it because it is fun or i am learning to be more patient and something like that i could play it for couple hours :D So i voted on 1 hr+ , but there are levels i dont want to finish after seeing it as the designer dont give a shit to even make it look fun so i dont give a shit to play it either.

Basically everything bullexcrements said

If a level is complete shit I will finish it just to rate it badly. If a level is shit AND ridiculously hard I try my best to finish it and rate it one star.

There's been a few I haven't been able to beat and just said screw it, it was definitely after a crap load of trying though.

Depends entirely on the level quality and how the difficult sections are paced.  But probably 15-30 minutes is the most I'll dedicate to any level after dying constantly, I know I spent at least 30 minutes on lots of Expert Remix levels and Starlight.

But it also comes down to if I feel like I'm progressing as I continue.  If I'm just dying over and over on the same obstacle for even 5 minutes, I just say fuck it.

1-5 minutes. I've had my share of extreme patience while playing the main game and I can't really say that I'm willing to spend a lot of time again playing levels that don't really compare well to the originals and are for the most part shoddily designed. Part of the problem is that most level authors can't properly balance difficulty at all (and the difficulty curve was one of SMB's stronger points) and make their levels way too hard and frustrating for me to be interested.

Finally, I'm pretty much done with the game as all of the editor problems chased me away from it. It's good that the chapter bug is finally fixed, but too little too late. I don't really care about the game anymore for it to really matter.

Well thanks for all the replies guys. It was interesting reading your motivations behind what drives you to keep going or stop. I'm also very interested in just how spread out the poll results seem to be. I really didn't expect very many responses for longer times... I guess some of you are more patient than me!

I kind of feel like at this point, if there's something I'm REALLY not getting, it's probably not completely my fault as a player. I've 100%'d the game 2 times and made/beaten a ton of custom levels, so I really shouldn't have to get too much better or it becomes machine-like dexterity that's required. I can do that in short bursts, but it's usually not particularly fun, and not something (I've learned) that should be aspired to in your level designs.

That's my take on it anyway.

Unless the level is absolutely god-awful, I can spend an hour+ trying to beat it.

Again, it depends completely on these principles:

1 - Name
Does it suit the level? Does it give some rhythm to the jumps in the level? Or is it a terrible name? A spam name? A blank name?

2 - Difficulty
Is it too easy? Is it too hard? Is it moderately challenging? Is it one of those where you just know you can beat it, but you just can't pass a certain point? Is it just plain annoying?

3 - Length
Too long? Too short? Just right? Looks like it could be much shorter and more fun, but just wraps around one spot 20 times? Longer than a Super Mario Bros level? Not even a level at all, where you just fall onto Bandage Girl?

4 - Decor
No decorations? Too many decorations (aka LAG)? Some decorations, but there could be more..? A good amount of decorations, fitting the level just right?

5 - Overall Fun
Is the level extremely annoying with 80 missiles chasing after you from 20 different directions? Is the level short with only a small saw between Meat Boy and Bandage Girl? Is the level short enough so you don't smash your monitor screen, but long enough for you to actually want to play it?

(6 - For the Copycats)
Is the level the same as another level you've seen on the portal? Is the level the same as yours? Does the level have the same name/name & character as your/somebody else's level? If not, then just ignore this 6th one.

If it's all pretty good qualities, then I might spend up to half an hour playing a level. If it's okay, then I'll probably spend 10-15 minutes on it. If it just plain sucks from the start (blocky, all one tile, boring, no camera) then I'll probably just go back to SMW and play a different level, unless there aren't any others to play, in which case I'll play through the level once or twice.
I always try to play every level I can. But if I find a bad one, I just pass it by (and give it the finger occasionally) and find another level to play. If I find a good one, I'll sit and play for awhile. All in all, you can't just set a timer for how long you'll play each level. It really depends.

I thought I was the only one who did that! Glad to hear I'm not alone.

I don't know why, but I'm very patient.
So I didn't gave up on any level, one bandage in rapture took me about 3 1/2 hours, that was really painful.

This is Super Meat Boy. It was advertised as a hard game, so the target audience is patient players.
