Farewell Super Meat World.. I barely knew ye.
Reading that killed any hope that the level portal would ever be decent.

^Same. I really liked Super Meat World for what it was, obviously lack of LB's and saves hurt it, but overall it was a great function to play and experience new levels. I just hope it doesn't devolve into this being a reason to close Meat World entirely...
In retrospect I think while SMW was a great idea, what was lacking made it a idea that was not ideal for most of us. For us, a portal like the XBLA version has with saves and LB's would have been ideal longterm, and sharing the user-created level through the forums here, or uploaded by Ed to the portal itself.
So while I respect and loved the experiment of SMW, in the end we would have been better served with a system like the XBLA version has. But that's just me.

The way I read that post was "I was so burned out by all the other work that I decided to ignore security altogether and hope nothing bad happens". Understandable on a personal level, but the bottom line is still that he knowingly shipped a flawed product. And if you reread the thread, it's not only about the problems with the game, but also Tommy's awful public response at the time. I honestly wonder if anything would have happened if he originally responded with a post like this instead of, well, this: http://imgur.com/xociV

He couldn't do anything about it. He only started being rude after people were fucking with things. And it's really stupid to say that he "launched a flawed product" with super meat boy, because SMW was created after demand from the fans. It's suprising and really cool that he even went through that effort to create SMW when he wouldn't be benefiting from it in any way. I don't understand how anyone can complain about something that was fucking free.
I think theres a moral to this story: I believe most people, still, are angry at team meat for this incident. This really doesn't make sense. I think anyone else would be angry (probably a lot more) if a bunch of other people we're fucking with a database you created while you couldn't do anything about it. If people are mad because SMW was shutdown, they should be mad at the people who opened the database, and not team meat. The moral is that it seems like most people will mindlessly jumped on the hatewagon without giving and thought or consideration to what they might be doing, which is honestly, a really terrible thing.

He only started being rude after people were fucking with things. Those quotes are from after people found this out but before anyone actually did anything. "It's fine. Trust me." "I've done this stuff for a while now. Thanks for your concern though." And it's really stupid to say that he "launched a flawed product" with super meat boy There are two kinds of people in this thread. Those who have any kind of clue about programming and some idea to what it means to give everyone full database access, and those who think it's perfectly reasonable to remove the front door from your house and expect nobody to ever walk in uninvited.

Programming experience doesn't have any relevance here. (I mean as in to tell whether this is right or wrong.) If the server held credit card info, I'd understand completely and agree with most of you, but the server was just for user made levels and that's all it had on it. The point is that Tommy didn't make it more secure from the very beginning because he would think there would be no reason to, considering theres no important information on it. If it actually did, it obviously would be much more secure. Honestly, the whole incident is very pathetic and embarrasing. (on the hackers parts.)

The relevance of programming experience is being able to see how incredibly stupid it was to implement the level uploading the way Tommy did. I think the open door analogy is a good way to illustrate this. Tommy built a house with no friggin' front door, then someone walked in and trashed stuff. I don't disagree with you saying that the house shouldn't have been vandalized, but I'm still going to put the blame on the guy who thought not having a door there would be a good idea and ask what the hell he was thinking.

I agree with that only a tiny bit. I guess you could said Tommy should've known better than to assume someone wouldn't fuck with the server for no reason. still makes them assholes.

I heard Tommy say in an interview the reason why the people did it was to point out that there is a vulnerability that people could use to access the database. So they were basically warning him about people like themselves.
