As you've probably noticed already, the spam bots have begun their attack on the forums.  Right now I am looking into modifying the forums with some more intense user registration tests to try to weed out the spam bots, but until then here's how you can help me out:

If you see any spam threads, please use the report to moderator link on the topic and report it to the moderators marked with the reason of "spam."  Also, please don't reply to any of the forum threads to bring more attention to them.

It might be a rough time until I get the forum mods up and running, but until then I'll just be deleting spam and banning spammers.  If it gets too out of control, then I will lock down the forums until the modifications are complete.  If this happens the forums will probably only be down for a couple days at the most.

Thanks!

The commpunity is also growing bigger. For both reason, maybe you should get some moderators to help you in it. For the moment, ppls are quite good at auto moderating, but they could help deleting the bots crap.

Any reason that the Notify feature even be used? I'm fairly certain all that does is send a message to the user whenever a new post is made in that topic. That doesn't help in reporting at all.

Just clicking on the red "Report to moderator" with the reason "Spam" should suffice.

I love the word derp. Just saying. Anytime anyone uses it, I must quote.

No problem. I've dealt with smf before, as both a moderator and as a user. The only thing I've never found a use for was the "Report to moderator" button because I could just as easily look at the forum whenever (one of the benefits of having a lot of time on my hands).

I agree.

Moderaters will help us weed out the jerks.

Being a jerk is no grounds on which to ban someone. They would be grounds on which to do so if said "jerk" was harassing others consistently and/or aggressively.

If anyone is to be made a moderator, I'd suggest that a rational and relatively neutral-minded candidate be chosen.

I honestly think their advertisements are literary masterpieces ;D

...

In all seriousness, in SMF technology, isn't there a way to ban e-mails or e-mail clients entirely so that spambots cannot get in?

I mean, on most boards that I used to moderate, I ban quite a few providers such as hotmail so that spambots cannot get in.

This, and I'd be fairly happy to if mods are ever chosen...I'm constantly here, as ridiculous as I sometimes may be I want the forum to be as peaceful as possible...plus I just want to be considered a SMB moderator  Meat Boy

In regards to SMF -- yes there are a number of modifications that can be made to try to stop spam.  When I ban spammers, I can also ban their host names and IP addresses and email addresses with wildcard characters.  So if a spammer with the email address "asshat@spam.com" registers then I can ban any future registrations from the email "*@spam.com"

The problem right now is that this forum is using a custom theme, which makes installing the mods a little bit more brutal, and I'll be tackling that soon enough.  We'll also probably be selecting some mods in the future, and I'll keep you guys posted on that.

Not what I was getting at.

Having moderators around cuts the general trolling that goes around on forums.
