Achievements would make people feel obliged to create levels, even if they're really bad at it.

Yes that could be true but that feel of obligation may bring the best map makers out of the shadows and into the light. the more people who use the editing tool the better !

Even if it did (I'm not convinced it would), it wouldn't be worth the sea of shit you'd have to wade through to get to a few extra good maps.

I don't like at all the idea of achievements about creating levels for a reason already mentioned. Many people without skill or patience would create crappy maps only for achievement whoring reasons.

But achievements for playing/completing maps in the portal, i like that. For example...
 - an achievement for Entering the Unknown and completing on hard more than 20 levels in a row (10 times). Or just for completing it, if there is a specific number of levels selected each time. Not sure how it works exactly. Oh, and numbers are examples.
 - another for completing a specific number of hard levels.

you don't know how good those extra maps are, no one does and if there isnt an achievement for the editor we may never find out.
I doubt theres going to be a "sea of shit" because i think people will see the great editor and want to create. plus if there is a "sea of shit" those levels will get voted down and disappear. Then what we are left with is a bunch of great maps  Meat Boy, great maps that may have never seen the light of day .

Maybe there could be quality based achievements, like have a map stay above a 4 star rating for 50 ratings, or something like that. This way, if you want the achievements, you'll need to put in more effort than placing bandage girl one step from Meat Boy on a flat platform.

My guess is the people who are going to make good maps are going to make them anyway because they don't need an achievement to have motivation in the first place. I'm also not a big fan of the idea of achievements that have nothing to do with in-game skill. It would be like a big middle finger to the guy who gets Impossible Boy but can't make a map that becomes popular (which is entirely possible because the two skillsets [being good at the game and making good maps] have nothing to do with each other).

Achievements would make people feel obliged to create levels, even if they're really bad at it.

See my above point about people who make good maps. If you want to sit around all day wasting your time playing terrible levels and thumbing them down, be my guest. If you don't think that will happen, you're being pretty naive.

well I guess I'm naive then because the way the systems set up I don't think we will have to worry about the bad maps.(http://supermeatboy.com/ "The unknown will only feature levels ranked 3+ on over all fun factor.")I think bad maps wont get 3 star ratings so they will never make it to the unknown. What I'm saying is that you wont have to play bad maps if you play in the unknown, because someone has to vote those maps up first. so I doubt there will be a significant amount of bad maps, if the system works properly. Also terrible is a matter of opinion, you may hate a map and someone else might love it. I understand what your saying and I respect your opinion but I do not think its fair to assume that someone making a map just for an achievement wouldn't be intrigued by the whole process and make great quality maps.

The trouble is if you make achievements people will make really quick maps just to get the achievement.  On the other hand, I'm sure people will realize "hey, this map sucks because I made it just to get _______.  I probably shouldn't upload it because it will tarnish my name as a map maker".

If there's an achievement for beating into the unknown, there's an incentive for people to make (and later upvote) stupid easy maps. You see this in Transformice - because the cheese you get for beating maps give you hats, everyone upvoted easy maps and downvoted hard maps that killed them.

I don't see this being a big problem because you get to pick your difficulty before entering the unknown.

And just because a map is easy does not make it "stupid".

The game sets the difficulty, not the user.  The achievements could be created for each difficulty, or only max, or 3+ up, etc.

Beat 20 Enter teh Unknown levels on 5 difficulty, then go cry in a corner.

What i'm interested in is if we can share levels with our Steam friends. If so, good achievement-

Share your levels to half of Super Meat Boy playing friends and make them share said level to _____ people. Vague, but could work?

Can we make a pact here at these forums ? When the level editor is released and levels start coming out, please god can we rate them correctly. If i have to dig thru fkn masses of fail levels to find a gem it will completely discourage me from playing ANY of the levels at all. I guess what im saying is we have to be mean about our critiques a bit to offset the random moron who just 5 stars something because it was easy enough for him to complete.

Reason I say this is because of some of the flash gaming sites. You will see or play some complete pile of shit and look at the score it has.. and its like fuckin 3.5 stars out of 5. Its a complete spit in the face to the guy who made an excellent game and is only 1.5 stars ahead of the idiots content.

See what im gettin at ?

PS. Maybe it wont matter and somehow Team Meat will encorporate some level of awesomeness to destroy crap levels.

I think the best (ranked) maps and map creators should be featured/promoted when browsing for levels, but having achievements dedicated to making maps could encourage the development of poor quality levels.
