The game is unplayable with a keyboard.

Objectively ridiculous. Read the post! The game is very playable with a keyboard.

Yeah, I'm in the club of people that purchased a wired 360 controller just to play this game.  Also jammed the A-button pretty freaking bad playing it.  Oops.  I don't think the people designing controllers at Microsoft planned for people to spend 80 hours solely pressing the A button while holding down the right trigger.

So has anybody had any prolonged experience playing this with a fight stick?  I might borrow my roommates' SFIV TE (Madcatz modded w/ Sanwa buttons/stick) fight stick and try it out.  I just didn't know if I should even bother.  On the 360 of course, but I'd be willing to look into ways to use it on PC...

Edit:  Just tried the SFIV TE R2 Fight Stick out for Meat Boy and...it's AWESOME!!!  After about an hour in Hell/Rapture/The End I think this is my preferred way of playing SMB now.  Everything just feels a lot tighter and engaging.  I love it, and I'd recommend it to everyone here to try!

yes I love arcade controls, have 10 arcade games in my house and I started playing super meat boy on my xbox 360 arcade cabinet that has two sf4 TE fightstick tops for the controls.  I learned to play using the stupid default configuration, button 3 to run, button 1 to jump.  it was awkward, there should be an option to switch the buttons.  anyway my brother likes the game but insisted on playing it with run button 1 and jump button 2, like mario.  I have a super mario arcade cabinet and play that, so the run b1, jump b2 config is something we have been using for a while.  So i actually opened up 2 more fightsticks and rewired the buttons so I have run b1, jump b2 and after a few hours playing like that I really like that configuration best.

As for playing super meat boy on an arcade stick it is a million times more fun to me than using a pad.  you can be really precise with tapping/holding run to adjust in the air, and I find I am way more accurate with a joystick than using the thumb stick or cross pad on the x360 controller.  you can easily do things with run you could never do with a trigger button, plus I just always preferred arcade controls for games.  the fact that this game works so well with arcade controls is probably the main reason I play it so much.  I highly recommend it and if you are an old school platform player I'd suggest rewiring it to run b1, jump b2 also, but jump b1, run b3 is manageable.

I can't believe so many people can use the keyboard with skill...  I first played Meat Boy with a 360 controller (on 360) though so maybe it became a habit.

In all my playtime, I've found that the absolute best controller's for Meat Boy come down to two models (a fight stick still being the most fun).  The Classic Controller Pro and the Sega Saturn USB controller (Saturn Model 2).  The weight, D-pad's, buttons, design and overall feel of these two just set them apart from anything else.  They easily beat the PS3 controller and slightly edge out the 360 wired controller.

But then again I'm a big controller fanatic so maybe some people don't care as much.  But yeah, go Saturn or CC Pro for SMB...you will not be disappointed.

I just like playing platformers with a controller. It goes all the way back to Mario 1 on the NES... it's just what I grew up with. I don't even really play many console games anymore but when it comes to platformers, the controller feels right. That said I've played plenty of platformers with the keyboard and didn't particularly feel like there was anything wrong with it. I will admit that the idea of mashing the keyboard for a game as frantic as SMB doesn't really appeal to me (especially ergonomically), but if it works for others (as it obviously does), knock yourself out!

KEYBOARD!!
I use keyboard, i use the "down" arrow for sprinting and "space" to jump and I find it very comfortable. I can tell you that my fingers don't get too much strain, but it also depends on the keyboard. I have a Toshiba laptop and the buttons are very "easy" to press compared to some old keyboards that have very "tall" buttons

I use keyboard but one time, I did a comparison between keyboard and controller: How far I could get through the Forest without dying as Meat Boy. However, I died on the same level with both of them, 1-20. I still use keyboard though, cause I'm just used to it after using it for so long. Also, a tip for anyone who uses keyboard and has to put their hand in a weird position; put your index finger on Shift and your thumb on Space. It might take a little getting used to, but your hand isn't in an uncomfortable position.

You could also just, y'know, remap your keys.
