I actually bought a Fight pad specifically for this game.  Before that I actually ruined the X Button on a 360 controller from pressing so hard on the run button 24/7.  My Arcade stick also worked really well but had a learning curve to it.

I'm probably weird for this, but I beat most of the game with keyboard, then got a controller, tried using it, and found it to be impossible for me. All the little trick jumps I had taught myself were to mechanical to be done easily and consistently on a controller.

So I just use it for emulated games now, I still play beat boy with a keyboard.

I am more used to keyboard, so I choose it.

However I am used to controller as well since I owned PS1 but I guess I still would do better job with keyboard.

I 106%'d the game and got multiple iron man achievements using the keyboard alone and not wasting my money on a controller.

You can too!

I have several years of muscle memory invested in the arrow keys... also, I don't buy the idea that pads are objectively superior =)

I rebound run/jump to z/x, though.

Wow, I'm amazed that so many people use the keyboard.
I find it impossible to time jumps correctly with the spacebar. Maybe another button, but not the space bar (but maybe it's because of my keyboard. The spacebar takes some time to register that it got hit)

At first I used my Dual Shock 3 controller, but since I want to play SMB on the go, I bought an wired XBox360 controller, so I can take it with my laptop since I don't need it for anything but SMB (and maybe one or two other games on steam)

I use the keyboard, but only because I don't have a controller.

I used a cheap gamepad, destroyed it while raging, beat the final boss with keyboard (was horribly hard to do) and then got a new better gamepad I'm playing with now.

I use the 360 controller. I have also played with an stick "SFIV Tournament Edition" but I think I play better with the controller. However, I think the stick is less painful for our fingers.

everything is possible if you use linux. I think there is a utility for that. (I would like to use it too but AMD fucked their video card drivers up so badly you can't even call it working and thus SMB doesn'T run on Wine)
