It baffles me because...

1) You're going under a false name, so nobody will personally recognise your 'achievement' other than strangers on a message board.
2) The times are nearly always obviously false to everyone, making the effort pointless, and even the closer ones can be seen through by the genuinely good speedrunners.
3) Even if you sucessfully con someone, you know it's fake, so the sense of achievement is hollow.
4) Even if you sucessfully con someone, it's only a videogame, so will generate hardly any meaningful respect in the wider world.

To my mind it's simply a case of petty, small minded people. Either desperately craving entirely meaningless attention wherever they can get it, or trying to throw a spanner in the works through jealousy and spite as they can't actually achieve shit in the real or virtual world, so feel a need to try to ruin the boards for others so nobody else can get any sense of achievement either.

I was under the impression that most low times were -mistakenly- so, due to lagging through walls/the timer not working properly.

Maybe on the PC, but on the 360 since the update all the fake times are from modders. The 0s have been removed.

I think it might be because they just want to annoy people, but I really don't know. I hope the PC gets an update removing the 0 scores and the players with levels beaten over 310 (Since there are only 310 levels).

Not true at all.  There are times on those leaderboards that are humanly impossible even with the ability to walk through walls.  The only time the timer goofs is the rare 0.00 timer glitch which was patched out forever ago... well before the leaderboards got beyond saturated with 0.00 times.

These people are blatantly cheating.  And I really don't get it either.  Why would you buy a game you don't intend on playing just to get steam achievements?  I mean seriously, don't you have something better to do with your time and money?

Some people literally don't.

I was number 1 on the Limbo leaderboards for the 360 last summer, and as they were based on finding all the secrets and were static (once you did everything, your position could not be beaten) my group locked up the top 10.

Then hackers started appearing with impossible completion percentages and spamming boards with how to guides that were completely invented just to waste people's times. It got to the stage where the developers made an official statement regarding the real percentage and gave all the legit top 10 a prize, which was really good of them, but this still didn't stop the hackers spamming forums and sending abusive PMs for weeks.

I find it almost impossible to understand what motivates them other than spite towards people who can do things they can't, no matter how meaningless, so they have to fake their own achievements and then try to discredit those of others, even when they're dealing with complete and utter strangers.

It's a form of psychotic insecurity and what's worrying is if they're willing to do it for a game, imagine what they're like secretly in real life when it comes to things that actually matter.

It's the same reason that some people are rapists, torturers and murderers...

Because they're morons.

It probably often stems from boredom. I think 1% of the 0.00 times will be mistakes (I have one of those myself by sheer accident), the other 99% are there just because they think it's funny/awesome or they think just because they found a glitch they deserve an unfair time.

They have problems and often are very young and don't understand how to play a game properly, the funny thing is that they PAY for this kind of cheating, I asked a guy who told me how this modding shit works.
