Wow, I guess I need to figure out how to use Naija. Nice work.

Indeed, I can't really either. Though that was originally because I was more focused on beating levels over speed-running.. but damn those videos are impressive.

So you were that guy that managed to finish Gurdy (3-14) in 2.80 seconds. And here was me thinking it would be impossible to get under 2.90, as my best time for Gurdy is 2.93.

Those are some beautiful Naija runs and it really pushed me to get myself a gamepad soon.

Strangely, for speedrunning some levels with Naija I've started holding the gamepad in this weird claw position where I prop it against a surface and use two fingers for left/right, and two fingers for run/jump...kind of like a keyboard, haha.  The superdash in particular is easier using different fingers, although still not easy.

For meat boy though, gamepad and using thumbs feels much more fluid.

I've been doing that since I got the game and I got a sore thumb after a few hours of playing, took me a while to remap, or rather finding the config file, the buttons so it felt good on a 360controller though. Left hand thumb is overrated!

I play her with my left thumb on the directional and my right thumb hovering over both jump and special.  I pound them both down to achieve an instant hop n' dash.  I can't imagine trying to play her with two separate fingers on each of those buttons again after figuring out hitting both at once works easier.  Might give the dual finger directional a try to see how accurate it is, but I foresee me getting annoyed by it

Two fingers for movement is only useful on levels that need constant, really fast direction switching.  I wouldn't suggest it most of the time.

roboticaust: I never managed to have success hitting special and jump at the same time.  Hitting jump first vs hitting dash first do different things and I couldn't control it hitting both so if I'm using my thumb I roll from one to the other.
The 1 frame superdash is definitely easier with one finger per button.

The game seems dedicated towards not letting me 100% it with a bugged 7-9x so I improved a few times instead.

The way your thumb overlaps both buttons naturally should make it more than possible since the base of your thumb will be the first one down when you press (this is assuming you are using the default control scheme for the xbox controller).  This makes her hop.  The dash follows super quickly since there isn't much pressure to go before the tip of your thumb gets down the special button.  When I do it, I get a perfect dash every time regardless if I'm on the ground, on a wall, against the ceiling, etc.

The issue is that dash occurs on release of the dash button, so its actually faster to roll from dash to jump to get the earliest dash since you release in the same motion as hitting jump.
Jump first is useful if you need a few more pixels of height though.

I use a ps2 controller as well, so it might be different (layout is triangle for dash, and circle for jump).  The xbox360 controller dpad can go douse itself in kerosene and jump into an open flame.

I've been using the 360 trigger for my dash, I'm not at the top of the naija rankings or anything but I'm pretty damn high.

I may try using X but it might be too late, I'd have to relearn the muscle memory for everything.

Yeah, the layout is definitely different on your end.  On the default xbox scheme (using the ps2 controller button names to avoid confusion here), the X is jump and Square is special.  Also, I never said I held the buttons down when I did that trick.  I press them and release instantly.  Because of the lighter pressure on the special as previously noted, it get's released earlier than if you pushed it normally if you get into the habit of doing the two button trick.

My biggest Naija control issue comes in the form of direction changes since I use the analog direction controls for her out of bad habit.  Thinking your dual finger approach on the d-pad might be the way to go.  Granted I can do it, I do occasionally botch it due to less than optimal split second reflexes on the analog.

Added a few more and also refuted the claim that flywrench is faster for the last hospital level :)

Updated original post with a list of runs and times and I'll probably add to it occasionally, unless it becomes too large.

Side note.  Started experimenting with keyboard controls and I think they might be the way to go for Naija, but relearning the muscle memory is hard.  Keys also make the Josef superjump a lot easier to pull off.
Also, for whatever reason, my controller input is somewhat buggy (nor sure if its the controller or the game), but when using controller is takes roughly 3x longer to detach from walls as opposed to keyboard.  This makes 7-9x literally impossible for me on controller, but easy on keyboard.  Its been hampering me the entire time but I never really noticed until 7-9x. +1 for learning keyboard controls.

I did learn how to do the superdash pretty consistently with just the thumb on a controller.

I got close to your 4-5x time (I think I'm in 4th place atm) but I messed up the end and could've been even faster, but I haven't got it at that speed again since :(
