Now unfortunately i'm a 360 player, so no level editor for me, but had what I thought was a great idea I wanted to share.

How about a 20 level chapter that splits 5 levels at a time into themes dictated by the warp zone tilesets (1-5 4-bit, 6-10 4 colour, 11-15, 8-bit, 16-20 normal/16-bit) and replicate a screen from a classic game in each, moving roughly upwards in history with each one.

For example for the first 5 levels...

1) Pong - http://thatstopten.com/images/video/pong.gif
Paddles as moving missile launchers, centre line missile destroyable blocks, Bandage Girl in 0.
2) Combat - http://www.vectronicsappleworld.com/collection/articlepics/atari2600/combat1.png
Make some surfaces deadly, replance tanks with Meat Boy and Bandage Girl
3) Berserk - http://gamesdbase.com/Media/SYSTEM/Atari_8_bit/Snap/big/Berzerk_-_1983_-_Atari.jpg
Replace guards with zombie Meat Boys. Have floating homing enemy as Ovil Otto.
4) Yar's Revenge - http://pfcdn.net/site/t/content_image/image/47/10/471035__yars-revenge-yars-revenge-atari-2600.jpeg?5ecfa6731c
Start on Yar. Breakable blocks in centre, moving laser cannon on other side inside breakable blocks and also housing bandage girl. No floor.
5) Breakout - http://www.veign.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/blogger/breakout.jpg
Paddle as moving missile launcher, blocks as missile breakable blocks. No floor.

Then move onto Gameboy with 6-10, NES 11-15 and finally SNES/Genesis with 16-20. (I of course understand the Gameboy came after the NES, but steady graphical progession would be better stylistically)

Sound good?

Also, i'd give them alternate names such as...

1) Stench
2) Mortality
3) Burkowski
4) Two Graves
5) Acne

Some are obvious, but bonus points for getting the other references.

I thought about making levels based on Atari games, but given the limited tilesets, I wasn't sure it could be done eloquently. I've got my fingers crossed that Team Meat has some surprises up their sleves for us in terms of modding.

For 2 color games it would be easy enough to put on one of them fancy filters that they use in game so Pong, for example, would be easy as shit to do.  You're right about the other ones though

As for this idea.....its genius.  I would totally do it, but I doubt I'll be very good and I want this idea to be given justice.

Well I was inspired by a video of a guy managed to do a Super Metroid tribute level extrememly well. Not sure if he's active on this forum though - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S5xUh9IJW1o

Ah yes, I have seen that level.  Quite the work that level is.  I can't wait for the level portal.  People are so creative.

Yeah I had a similar idea but You have to use the same tileset on all the levels in a chapter.

Hmm, that kind of sucks. Hopefully they'll change that when the full editor is released. I can see why they would keep that rule for thematic reasons, but it does limit creativity a bit.

I'm all for limiting tilesets in individual levels (no mixing 4-bit and 4-colour for example) but feel you should be able to alternate in an entire chapter.

I was just taking what LeetFruitBoy said on blind faith. I've no knowledge of the editor at all being a 360 guy.

A very good idea! I would love to take part in this kind of a project.

I've already planned to possibly make separate NES and SNES tribute chapters on my own though. I'll pick some of the childhood games I absolutely loved, choose a level or area from them and try to be faithful to the original layout yet add a balanced amount of traps to make them as speedrunnable as possible. But, like I wrote, it's still nothing but an idea, nothing concrete done yet.

About the tilesets, I'm pretty sure you can change them between levels. For example, I don't seriously think that the upcoming official remix chapter has been created using a single tile set.

If people are interested in doing this, then i'd definately like to be involved. Only have the 360 version so can't physically build one, but can help with design.

..or I could just buy the PC version and put it on my laptop, but don't really want to buy the same game twice.

Only other issue is this'd definitely never get put on Teh Internets like Cramps did purely due to blatant copyright infringement!

Doh! You should definitely buy SMB for PC, I did that despite I bought the 360 version first. Just imagine the amount of user made content you get to experience on PC + the opportunity to become a level creator yourself.

Anyway, I'm willing to co-operate in a way or another with you and others. Let's see what happens when the portal is finally out. Hmm, I guess I'll make my first serious level design tests tonight. I've been willing to remake a part of NES Kid Icarus' first stage for a week now.

Kid Icarus would be great!

Here's my NES screen choices, with appropriate Meat Boy-ish alternate titles below.

1) Kid Icarus - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KSfS9w9_0kg
World 1, as you say, would be great. Lots of zombie meats and floating homing enemies.
2) Legend of Zelda - http://www.danwinckler.com/blog/archives/zelda_overworld.gif
Lots of choice. String together a few interesting overworld screens.
3) Mario Bros. - http://fc02.deviantart.net/fs49/f/2009/219/0/5/3D_Mario_Bros__by_NES__still_the_best.png
Pipes spit fireballs and zombie Meats.
4) Metroid  - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MvfHfjBY4z4
Huge number of areas to choose from! Possibly Mother Brain boss area with rotating missile launchers?
5) Super Mario Bros. 3 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bfIBvoQZL0c
Bowser's Airship. Again, a huge amount to choose from. Could use spike/lava wall to force movement and simulate forced side scrolling.

Alternate titles... As with the main game, I try to keep them esoteric/dark/cynical, but with a connection to the source.

1) Hindenburg
2) Sierpinski
3) Plumbism
4) Trenbolone
5) Wizardry

Again, points for getting the references! (nobody get the first set?)
