1) Kid Icarus - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KSfS9w9_0kg
World 1, as you say, would be great. Lots of zombie meats and floating homing enemies.
2) Legend of Zelda - http://www.danwinckler.com/blog/archives/zelda_overworld.gif
Lots of choice. String together a few interesting overworld screens.
3) Mario Bros. - http://fc02.deviantart.net/fs49/f/2009/219/0/5/3D_Mario_Bros__by_NES__still_the_best.png
Pipes spit fireballs and zombie Meats.
4) Metroid  - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MvfHfjBY4z4
Huge number of areas to choose from! Possibly Mother Brain boss area with rotating missile launchers?
5) Super Mario Bros. 3 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bfIBvoQZL0c
Bowser's Airship. Again, a huge amount to choose from. Could use spike/lava wall to force movement and simulate forced side scrolling.

Great picks. Meat Boy I've actually planned remaking something already from numbers 1,2,4 and 5. Add also, for example, The Adventures of Rad Gravity and Castlevania games in the mix. Those are all good games to begin with for they have numerous great platforming parts. Most of them are also extremely well known, so it should be fun to play the remake levels if they are done right in every key area (regarding things like visual style, adjusting the difficulty to match different games, multiple speedrun routes etc).

I'll reject number 3 for now though since there's someone already making very respectable remakes of its levels. Here's the guy's channel on youtube, I think: http://www.youtube.com/user/CrunkMcStuddles

EDIT: Oh, it was Mario Bros. Not the other one. Meat Boy I think number 3 could be taken into consideration as well then!

EDIT 2: And yeah, I already planned remaking some airship level from SMB 3. At the moment, I see a lot of flying platforms that carry salt in them!

Yeah, original Castlevania or Simon's Quest would be awesome. Something from Mega Man too as it's already full of spikes and hazards!

Mario Bros (either the original or the Super ones) are probably too well known and will be done a million times, so would probably best being left out if we wanted the chapter to stand out, although SMB 3's airships are waaaay too tempting and suitable!

Some more obscure NES games are better if we want to make sure we're not doing anything that's been done, but the issue is that they need to be iconic enough that the area would be generally recognised - even among a generation that has probably never played them...

Here's a few suggestions - Bubble Bobble, Battletoads, Contra, Excitebike, Goonies 2, Ninja Gaiden, Solomon's Key, TMNT. All (apart from Bubble Bobble) recognised as having SMB levels of difficulty too!

Not sure if Midnight Resistance had a NES version, but that's full of blades and missiles.

Good, seems like I've forgotten a lot of good games from the NES times. I'm really amazed I didn't come up with ideas from the Megaman, Contra and Ninja Gaiden series since I used to play them like a lunatic back then.

All of the games you listed can be used. In general, as long as the chapter and level names have enough references to the selected gaming platform / game, I guess people will have fun trying to guess from which games the levels are from (considering they are fun to play anyway).

Earlier today, I tested making a Kid Icarus map with the Rapture tileset, but it just didn't feel right despite there are the zombies available to replace snakes and flying faces (or whatever) to replace the flying eyes. I started a new map not long ago with the glitch tileset and now it feels much better, like a real NES tribute level. I'll post some screens / video when I finish the first test level. I won't make this one (Kid Icarus stage 1-1) as long as the original though for I want to put the main priority on speedrunning.

Good work!

Well, yeah, the idea was to use the tilesets for the eras, so gltich for 8-bit would be perfect.

Don't want to be a damper, but a Pong-based level has already been done.

It's level 5. Sorry for the bad news. Although, it would still be cool to make another one.

Alright, I figured out how to make a signature! Aren't you all proud of me?
You aren't? That's not very nice!
Hmmph. You're all just jealous, because my signature is so cool! Yeah. Jealous.

I like the nod to Simon's Quest.  Many people rag on the game and claim that the only good part is the music, but honestly its pretty damn fun if you play without a guide.  Trying to find out who's lying and who isn't is such a great concept.

Ok. I finished the first NES tribute level. The basic layout is from the very first part of stage 1-1 in Kid Icarus and I used the glitch tileset to recreate the good old NES feeling. Oh, and the difficulty level is supposed to be easy.

I uploaded a video to youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lIioYKqp5gg

Download the level here: http://www.mediafire.com/?o1t93twkll8fq3r

Feel free to comment and so on.

Please don't be offended when you see a level in my chapter patterned after "combat". I started it a couple weeks ago and I promise I hadn't seen anyone mention working on the idea yet.

Aghhh! I'm tempting myself to buy the PC version now so I can start making some myself! I just don't want to get sucked into the portal, as 310-ing this was stressful enough, but at least it had an end point. The portal will kill me!

Great work BTW!

If I were you I'd contain my urges and not buy the PC version, then as soon as the level portal went live I would lose all control and purchase the game as well as 12 other games that I don't really need or want but, hell, they're on sale on Steam and who can say no to Steam sales?
