Valve is the most epic big game maker/publisher in my opinion. They listen to the community, and never disappointed me with their games.

Since Valve only makes FPS games I can't support them as I am not a fan, but I can appreciate the quality of their games and the level of dedication they pour into the creation of them. I can also give them major props from not being dicks about mods and the like.
Portal is awesome though (if not a little overrated, but honestly what good game isn't overrated by its fans?)

Yep, some Mods even became Valve Titles (Counter Strike and Day Of Defeat, don't like them really much though).
It's also amazing how easy they make the modding, with their tools and the very epic engine.

All of their games except for Half Life (and L4D?) have come from modders.

L4D was made by Turtle Rock Studios or something like that, and those guys were making mods FOR counter strike... again not really sure, someone correct me?

Alien Swarm and DotA2. You named 2 games. 1 they gave away for free since they didn't think it was worth charging for and the other isn't out yet. They still make FPS games with few exceptions.

One they gave away to both award those who use Steam, as well as draw in potential new users of the service, and the other will be epic upon release. Putting aside the fact that their current lineup is mostly shooters, Valve is the only "monopoly" which I do not mind. Awesome sales, auto-updating, and ease of purchasing games. My Steam account already has $1000+ worth of software, and I will continue to add to it. Other digital distribution platforms, such as Games for Windows Live, are laughable at best in comparison. Hell, even Duke Nukem Forever (which I pre-ordered the retail Balls of Steel Edition of) will use Steamworks, so i can add my serial key and activate it on Steam in case I ever lose my disc. Ahhhh yeahhhhhhhh.

Lets be honest though, the game wouldn't have sold if they tried to charge for it. You don't see them offering up Half Life as a way to entice people to use Steam. I know nothing about Dota, but based on the fact that Valve is working on it I'm sure it will be great. Valve is like the worlds best cup of coffee: Awesome, but I'm a tea guy. Also Steam is the greatest invention ever.

I thought it was something like that but couldn't remember enough to make such a statement in case I was wrong. It's funny though when you realize Valve haven't really released an "original" idea since the Half Life series. :P

Or you can see that 2 exceptions out of a 20+ game library is not exactly a great argument if you're being realistic
