Post 'em up here. The whole game just commited suicide by implementing trades, and to a greater extent, hats. Worst of all, crates. They're the only item I seem to get, and you have to buy2.50 keys to get some crappy items. Not to mention imo valve sold out by making pretty much every preorder give you boring hats and useless weps.

No.

Trading was great, because it gives you a new way to obtain items you are otherwise unlucky enough not to get. I met someone who had never had a GRU drop in his life, and I'd gotten 5 in a week. So I traded him one.
Unfortunately people spam, but that's normal in any game. It's quietened down now people have gotten used to everything again. People have wanted trading for ages, Valve just met demand.

Crates do not count towards your drop rate. You could get 20 crates in a week and still get plenty of items. Therefore, they can be ignored and deleted if you hate them so much. No need to hate on them since they do not effect your game at all.
Also, the few crates I have opened, only 2 have been weapons, the rest have been hats and paints (the paints I trade for reclaimed metal, so it works).

How can you hate on hats? They are a great customization tool. The only thing that sucks is that now there is so many, they outweigh the number of weapons. But that doesn't matter. If you don't like wearing hats, don't wear them.

Preorders, hate them? Who cares? They are simply promotional items for if you liked a game and bought it. You do not need to wear them. They are a great marketing tool, as it introduces a wide audience to a new game, and those who were following the new game get introduced to TF2. It is not selling out when they advertise another company's game. That company gets the majority of the money, so it's simply Valve helping out others.

This unnecessary hate doesn't really belong here. You should take it back to the Steam User Forums, and join the rest of the fans who insist on hating on things the majority don't mind.

I know how you feel lately with things like the Rift Items, the Amputator, and other broken items like that have been breaking the game.

Still a fun game to play though I have had an even easier time topping teams even in some more Comp settings.

So its balanced itself out.

Also on the term of hats the first 9 were cool back in the day once we got improved drop rates and more hats then crafting it really became quite lame to have a hat and they have been boring ever since.

Based on the 18 short hours I put into TF2:

1) Crates are the bullshitiest of bullshit ever to be implemented into a game ever.
2) People flood the chat window with trade requests and its really fucking annoying.
3) Hats are kinda cool.  I don't see why people complain about them.  I guess they do cause some of the trouble mentioned in #2, but that's just because people care too much.
4) Pre-order hats help other developers.  How many people do you really think purchase TF2 just to acquire a hat in it?  Nobody.  Way too many people are willing to buy a game for a hat though.  Its dumb.
5) I can't comment on gameplay, weapons, etc because I sucked and stopped playing.

Also don't forget that there's still AN ACTUAL GAME UNDERNEATH ALL OF THAT.

I am simply astonished by the amount of people who refuse to play the game anymore because of cosmetic items that not only don't affect the gameplay (Except for the first polycount packs, but only the special delivery makes any impact), but also can be disabled through scripting.

And if you don't want to see trade requests you can just turn them off.

Shit, I need to stop getting distracted by other threads when I go grab links. This is in response to just the first two posts.

Tf2 was better when there were no items, i like hats, but everything else sucks.

Why?

It broke the games balance. Everybody used to be on the same playing field. its too much of a damn mmo now.

I don't like it anymore because it's strayed so far from it's original vision: An easy to pick-up-and-play multiplayer shooter, based around the idea that it was the "everyman's game". I don't hate hats but I hate what they've turned the majority of the community into.

Good groups in tf2 are really hard to find nowadays since most have degenerated into lololo 24/7 32 player instant respawn 2fort...

What are you talking about? It still is, just with more content than in 2007. It's easier to pick up and play now more than ever now that there's a tutorial and offline practice with bots.

No, really, what the shit are you talking about?
Every game has idiots in its community. The bigger the community, the more idiots there are. What does Valve have to do with this aside from selling the game?

You must not be looking very hard, or at all for that matter. Just search for cp maps when you browse servers, problem solved.

Why?

It broke the games balance. Everybody used to be on the same playing field. its too much of a damn mmo now.

It's still balanced. Those new weapons are side-grades, not upgrades. The ONLY exception is the Amputator, but that will probably be fixed soon. Every single weapon except for that one has a downside of some description that makes it merely a situational alternative.
Secondly, everyone can get any game changing item. We not only have achievement unlocks, but crafting, trading AND optional purchasing. Every single one can be obtained. This is where it differs to "MMOs". You do not pay for an advantage.

Finally, Valve are constantly balancing the game. That item is overpowered? THEY FIX IT. There's a bug? IT GETS FIXED. They even have the beta now to test the balancing of various ideas. Right now they're trying a change to the Vita-Saw, Backburner, and a new flare gun (as well as many other things).

I don't like it anymore because it's strayed so far from it's original vision: An easy to pick-up-and-play multiplayer shooter, based around the idea that it was the "everyman's game". I don't hate hats but I hate what they've turned the majority of the community into.

It's still easy to pick up, but for different reasons. There's the training/offline practice to get introduced to the game, and items are slowly filtered to you through the drop system while you learn the ins and outs. Everything isn't dumped on you at once.

As for good groups, it's like any game; there'll be shitty servers, and good servers. This is why there is options to "favourite" and "blacklist" servers. Personally, I've got numerous good communities in my favourites tab. There are many if you know where to look.

There's a ton of 24 man servers on my favorites list that consist of players that either are damn good at the game or people that have played or are still playing competitive TF2. Hell, I even have a server in my favorites list that blocks the use of any unlockables.

TF2 is still as great as it was in launch, if not better. There's no real gameplay breaking weapon (only those "upgrade weapons" like the Amputator or the Equalizer), and the updates keep the game fresh.

The only bad things in my opinions were the Golden Wrench distribution and the Mann Co Store. They wanted to make very rare items gettable by a gambling system (unusual hats) but these hats are already common. Those shiny and flaming hats are a Sniper's wet dream.

I don't care for what peopel say, it's still my favorite game of all time.

I know what I'm saying, I have a Wiki Cap and a Community Wrench

I will have to wholeheartedly disagree. TF2, for me, was completely and utterly destroyed the instant random drops were implemented, and then even moreso with trading. Prior to these two new "features" I had played the game 800+ hours. Post-"features", only about 60 hours.

Every server went from objective--based team playing to "omg look at mai hat!, want to trade?". "trading paint!!!". Everyone idled, some within game and some with external programs, until they labelled everyone who idled using external apps as cheaters and split the community. Then they implemented a max amount of items you can find per week to a ridiculously low number, making those that idled previously in game have a huge advantage.

It's really sad to see such a great game go the way it did. One of Valve's only mistakes in my opinion. It sucks even more because TF2 is where I met my girlfriend over 2 years ago, and now the game leaves only a sour tastes in my mouth, not the shining example of an FPS it used to be.

The game as it stands now is ridiculous and I haven't played it in months.

Zombie_Plan there are 4 Pure Upgrades,

Amputator

Holy Mackerel (The counter doesn't display a kill on a DR set off)

The Special Delivery Set Bonus (Not having a HM even though in theory there the same weapon makes you lose the 25 Hp)

The Medieval Medic Set Bonus (Not having The Amputator but the Bonesaw makes you lose +1 Hp Regen)

+ The 3 Set Bonuses that are pure upgrade because someone has the hat.

The Tank Buster
The Croc-o-Style Kit
The Special Delivery

Another problem I had was the achievements.  Since I could unlock new stuff by getting X achievements I found myself trying to get them, which obviously would detract from the overall experience since likely I wasn't the only one doing so.

I'm also a total dumbshit when it comes to FPS games so if that isn't a valid argument then by all means correct me.

Obviously it all comes down to opinion though

I, to be as honest as possible, quit tf2 and set fire to my hard drive the moment it paired up with such a horrifying, furry game as Sam and Max. I'm really, really unhappy that Valve stooped to such sexual deprivation. I checked it out in December, to give it another chance. I took one look at the heavy's new means of masturbation (Bear claws) and began slapping the monitor with my 12 inch cock until it burst into flame.

Game Of The Year? More like game of the YIFF.
