Keep it Meat Boy.  Seriously, no one is going to see your levels in the portal if you make them all in Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2's level editor.

I think one that should be stressed is:

Keep it short.

The longest levels in SMB are about 45-50 seconds long. And generally can be speedran in about 20ish. If you can't speedrun your level in under a minute is is way too long.

Levels that do the same thing more than a couple of times (Four Letter Word) or mash up tons of ideas into one level (Babylon) could likely be done better as separate levels for fun factor (Examples are probably just the most notable ones in the original sets).

I actually liked the way the final boss level (and dark world version) worked and that was a bit on the long side, also some of the levels from The End too. Most of the time this rule does apply though... there are just a few exceptions like with everything.

The trick is to tone down the difficulty if you want a longer level.  I've also noticed that Edmund designed the long levels to be get harder and harder till the mid point then get easier towards the end, so that's something to keep in mind if you want to make a long level.

Yep!

But even the longest of the levels in the End like Omega can be quite happily speed-ran in under 30 seconds. They're some of my favourite levels in the game because the difficulty is very good with respect to the fact they're all large-ish levels. They're also very predictable with their hazards. Long levels with Demon Maws/Rocket Launchers I doubt will ever be fun

It's just something to keep in mind, I think. There's always an overwhelming push that 'longer = better' and I don't think it is necessarily true!

The Golden Rule:

SAWBLADES.

If your level doesn't have at least one Sawblade in it, it sucks. It completely ultimately sucks.

Bear in mind that the last level of a given chapter is usually a gauntlet of some kind, so 4 Letter Word and Babylon get a pass. But that's because they're one level in twenty that pull that kinda stuff. In my eyes, you can get away with a couple levels that are long or have varied threats in a full-sized chapter, but that's about it.

Don't listen to him.  Sawblades may be the most iconic Meat Boy hazard, but not every level has Goomba's.  There are thousands of good ideas for stages that don't need sawblades.

Not if you're making a Forest level.
